Learn to be a trainer for The Key Vocabulary Routine! Is your school or district interested in offering professional development for vocabulary instruction using in-house trainers? If the answer is yes, then this train-the-trainer might be right for you.
Description
The Key Vocabulary Routine is a research-based vocabulary instruction professional development program for teachers of any subject in grades 3-12. Teachers learn how to teach academic vocabulary throughout the school day using existing content reading and instructional materials. When used across multiple grade levels, students benefit from a consistent approach to vocabulary instruction as they move from grade to grade and subject to subject. The routine includes:
- Activities for previewing vocabulary before reading
- Four activities for teaching words by relating them to background knowledge and related words
- Selecting words to teach in-depth
- Templates and user-friendly definitions to teach specific words
- Teaching use of context and word parts (morphology) to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words
- Promoting word consciousness in the classroom
This five-day course prepares literacy educators to provide professional development for this teaching routine using face-to-face training combined with an online course.
Participants will learn how to:
- Deliver initial training to teachers
- Provide follow-up coaching to teachers
- Deliver a workshop for administrators about how to support implementation
Upon completion of the course, participants will become licensed trainers and can deliver training for their sponsoring school district.
What’s included:
- 5 days of training, certificate of 27.5 hours
- Materials: The Key Vocabulary Routine training book, online course registration, Level I Trainer Manual and all training materials
- Free access to the password protected Keys to Literacy resource center
Graduate Credit is available from University of the Pacific.
ABOUT CERTIFIED LEVEL I TRAINERS
This Train-the-Trainer model is for districts that want to use in-house staff to provide training to teachers. Teachers learn the teaching routine via a combination of face-to-face sessions (7.5 hours) conducted by district Level I trainers and completion of an online training course (approx. 9 hours). Level I trainers have flexible scheduling options for delivery in full days, half-days, or 90-minute sessions.
School districts are required to purchase a training book and online registration for each educator who is trained by a Level I Trainer at a cost of $100 per person (plus shipping for the book).
Recommended Trainer Experience
In order to deliver successful training for our programs, we recommend that Level I Trainers have the following:
- Experience teaching students in grades 4-12
- Experience delivering formal professional development to groups of educators, including the use of PowerPoint slides
- Background knowledge about research-based methods for teaching literacy
*PLEASE NOTE
The online course is an essential component of this Level I training. Participants will need to use a desktop or laptop computer. During the 5 days of training, you will complete online course modules, observe the trainer modeling the face-to-face sessions, and participate in debriefing activities.
