Instructional Suggestions for Beginning Phonics Instruction

Tuesday, October 13, 6:30-7:15 PM, EST

Phonics instruction helps children use the alphabetic principle to learn the relationship between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language. They need this knowledge in order to decode and spell words as a foundation for developing fluent reading and spelling. This webinar will 1) explain the alphatetic principle and an explicit, systematic approach to teaching phonics; 2) present a phonics scope and sequence; and 3) present guidelines for effective phonics instruction and a generic phonics lesson routine.

The Writing Rope: The Strands That Are Woven Into Skilled Writing

Tuesday, December 1, 6:30-7:15 PM, EST

Much has been written about the multiplicity of skills involved in reading (e.g., the five components). However, when it comes to writing instruction, teachers are not sure about what they should teach. With a nod towards Hollis Scarborough’s “Reading Rope”, Joan Sedita has developed a model that identifies writing skills as strands that are woven together to support skilled, fluent writing. During this webinar, she will present a writing instruction model for all grades that addresses each of these strands in the writing rope: Critical Thinking, Syntax, Text Structure, Writing Craft, Transcription Skills.
