About this Training

This practical course provides the background knowledge your preservice teachers need to effectively teach foundational literacy skills using an explicit instruction approach. The teaching suggestions are practical and designed to easily transfer to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published reading program. The course is tightly aligned with state literacy standards. Keys to Beginning Reading is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Center for Effective Reading Instruction.

Facilitated Online Format:  This facilitated-online option is for faculty who want to complete the online course and participate in live, virtual debrief sessions facilitated by a Keys to Literacy trainer. These sessions provide a collaborative opportunity to debrief activities completed during online modules, share ideas for connecting course content to classroom instruction, and have the facilitator answer questions and clarify online course content.

  • Module 4: Phonics & Advanced Word Study
  • Module 5: Fluency
  • Module 6: Vocabulary
  • Module 7: Sentence Structure
  • Module 8: Text Structure
  • Module 9: Comprehension
  • Module 10: Reading Difficulties
  • Module 11: Reading Assessment

 

Note for Faculty of Kansas Institutions of Higher Education: We are pleased to announce that Keys to Literacy is a Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) approved provider of science of reading structured literacy professional development, offering the comprehensive and practical Keys to Beginning Reading.

 

Facilitated Online Course Schedule:

Note, the facilitated sessions will be held via Zoom meeting from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM CT/ 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET

Participants will receive access to the online course by December 15, 2024

  • Session One: February 14 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM CT / 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
  • Session Two: March 14 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM CT / 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
  • Session Three: March 28 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM CT / 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
  • Session Four: April 11 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM CT / 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
  • Session Five: April 25 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM CT / 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
