About the Course

Keys to Literacy is proud to partner with The One8 Foundation to offer a customized 15-hour version of Keys to Beginning Reading (KBR) to qualifying Massachusetts educators. This practical course is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) Center for Effective Reading Instruction. KBR provides the background knowledge needed to teach all the components of beginning reading instruction. The instructional practices are designed to easily transfer to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published reading program. The course is tightly aligned with Massachusetts state literacy standards.

How will the course be offered?

Between January and May 2024, educators working in One8 / Ignite Reading schools are eligible to participate in a hybrid-online course titled Keys to Beginning Reading that totals 15 hours

First, educators will apply using this application. Once accepted, participants spend approximately 10 hours completing modules on their own via an asynchronous online course and attend two, 2.5 hour, virtual-live meetings facilitated by Keys to Literacy trainers that total 5 hours.

The course is organized into two parts.  For each part, participants complete a 5-hour portion of the online course prior to attending a 2.5- hour, virtual-live facilitated session. Participants access the self-paced online course content via readings, videos, quizzes, and reflection activities. They share some of their reflections as a component of the virtual-live facilitated sessions. Note: There will be multiple date/time options for each required session.

To receive credit for completing the course, and to be eligible for 15 PDPs, participants must complete the full online course and attend both virtual-live meetings. In cases of emergency or illness, participants must coordinate with One8 about attending a different session.

The One8 Foundation is currently covering the $325 enrollment fee per person in addition to the cost of facilitated sessions for every educator who chooses to participate.  The Foundation reserves the right to assess a $325 fee to participants should they register and fail to complete the course.

One8 / KTL Participant Expectations (to ensure participants have an optimal virtual learning experience):

  • Complete the asynchronous course content prior to the facilitated session.
  • Come to each facilitated session prepared – with your response notebooks, your KBR book, and any questions/comments/ideas that you would like to share.
  • Please have, and leave, your camera on during the facilitated session.  This allows for better connection, community building, and conversation.  It also allows the trainer to be maximally effective.
  • Participate using your own device rather than with multiple people on a single device. This enables successful breakout room conversations and, again, allows the trainer to do their job effectively.
  • Find a quiet space from which you will zoom into the facilitated sessions.  This will help minimize distractions.

Big picture – The One8 Foundation is thrilled to partner with KTL to offer this course free of charge for educators working with Ignite Reading this school year. We sincerely hope participating educators will make the most of the opportunity and participate in appropriate and respectful ways at all times.  We hope you will take advantage of this offering, but urge you to review what committing to complete it entails to ensure you complete the work, earn the associated PDPs, and learn more about Science of Reading-based foundational literacy content!

Session Dates and Times

In order to start the online course the week of January 15, participants now have until January 12 to apply.
