Keys to Literacy is a Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) approved provider offering the comprehensive and practical Keys to Beginning Reading training to help you meet the requirements.

About Keys to Beginning Reading:
Accreditation: Accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Center for Effective Reading Instruction.
Content: This practical course provides the background knowledge needed to teach all the components of beginning reading instruction.
Practical Approach: Evidence-based instructional practices are designed to easily integrate with any reading curriculum.
Course Completion: Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) requires that all 11 modules of Keys to Beginning Reading professional development be completed in order to meet the minimum 40-hour licensure requirement.

About Keys to Beginning Reading Training:
The course is organized into 11 modules covering topics that include: literacy basics, oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics & advanced word study, fluency, vocabulary, sentence structure, text structure, comprehension, reading difficulties, and reading assessment. Who Should Enroll: Beginning on July 1, 2028, educators who renew a license and fall into one of the categories below must provide verification of completing a state-approved training or passing a state-approved exam.

- Elementary Special Education teacher
- Elementary School Psychologist
- Elementary Reading Specialist
- Elementary Administrator
Format: Multiple Options for Accessing Keys to Beginning Reading
Option 1: Facilitated Online Course, School or District Funded: Cohorts of up to 35 educators participate in the 40-hour asynchronous online course and attend five, 2-hour facilitated sessions, live via Zoom. Keys to Literacy will collaborate with the school/district to customize a delivery schedule based on their calendar.
Option 2: Live Training for Schools or Districts, School or District Funded: Cohorts of up to 35 educators participate in six days of in-person or virtual, live training with a Keys to Literacy consultant. Keys to Literacy will collaborate with the school/district to customize a delivery schedule based on their calendar.
Option 3: Certified Facilitator Training, School or District Funded: Schools or districts can select in-house expert literacy educators to become Keys to Beginning Reading Certified Facilitators. A certified facilitator leads learning sessions with teachers using our asynchronous Keys to Beginning Reading course and a series of facilitated meetings.
