Keys to Literacy is proud to partner with WI Reads to offer our Keys to Beginning Reading (KBR) course at a discounted rate for individuals looking to meet the professional development requirements of Act 20. This 36-hour course provides the background knowledge needed to teach all the components of beginning reading instruction. The instructional practices are designed to easily transfer to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published reading program.
About Keys to Beginning Reading
Keys to Beginning Reading includes an asynchronous course combined with live facilitated sessions with a seasoned Keys to Literacy trainer. The online course takes approximately 36 hours to complete and includes a training manual. After completing a designated number of modules independently, teachers will meet with their Keys to Literacy trainer to debrief the content and make connections to classroom practice. Keys to Literacy offers five, 2.5 hour facilitated sessions around Keys to Beginning Reading course content.
The online course contains 11 modules covering the following topics:
- Reading Basics
- Oral Language
- Phonological & Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics & Advanced Word study
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Sentence and Text Structure
- Comprehension
- Students with Reading Difficulties
- Reading Assessment
International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Accredited & WI Act 20 Compliant
This practical course is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) Center for Effective Reading Instruction. The course includes evidenced-based instructional practices aligned with the National Reading Panel and subsequent Institute of Education Science research guides, including a direct and structured approach to literacy instruction. The instructional practices are designed to easily transfer to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published reading program. The course is tightly aligned with state literacy standards.

In partnership with WI Reads, we are delighted to offer up to 35 Wisconsin K-5 teachers access to the Keys to Beginning Reading facilitated online course for $530 per teacher, which includes access to the online course, the training manual, and 12 hours of facilitated sessions to gain deeper insights into the course content.

All sessions will take place from 4:00-6:30 pm central time on the following dates:
