Karen is a Trainer at Keys to Literacy and 40+ years as a teacher, reading coach, assessment coordinator, professor, and literacy consultant have included wonderful adventures and a lifelong love of learning. Karen began her career as a teacher in the primary grades for 16 years. Along the way she earned her Master’s Degree, Early Childhood Certification, and ELL Endorsement (English Second Language) and began working for Arizona State University as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Education, teaching phonics, language arts, and classroom management. At Tempe Elementary District, she served as a reading coach at several elementary schools and then as the Assessment Coordinator at Aguilar School. The Arizona Department of Education asked Karen to join their staff as a State Reading Specialist for several years where she became a LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) Trainer, DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) Trainer, Common Core Consultant, and Six Traits Trainer. After retiring, Karen has continued her work as a literacy consultant with the Arizona Department of Education, 95 Percent Group, and Keys to Literacy, where she is happily training teachers wherever she is invited!
