Peggy Griebenow knew early in life that she wanted to be an educator. She has been living that dream for 35 years. She is currently a district literacy specialist for a Colorado school district. Her passion for the science of reading was born out of her desire to see all students become skilled readers through systematic and explicit instruction in the five components of reading that are taught daily in a structured literacy block.
Peggy has a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Idaho and an MS in Educational Leadership from University of Houston. She was a classroom teacher for 13 years as well as a district level coordinator for math, science, social studies and gifted education. Her leadership journey also includes service as a middle school assistant principal. Prior to moving into her literacy specialist role, she was an elementary principal for 18 years. Her schools have consistently grown students. This included leading one school from academic watch, when she arrived, to 5 consecutive years as a Governor’s Distinguished Improvement School. Peggy is a system thinker who believes that, with the science of reading approach to literacy and a school culture focused learning, all students can be successful. She believes that literacy leadership in a building and district are essential to student success.
In her free time she loves to spend time with her husband, children, grandchildren and crazy dog, Rosie.
