Information about the Understanding Dyslexia Course

Understanding Dyslexia is an Oregon approved 6-hour training that meets the URD training requirement. This course provides the background knowledge about dyslexia that elementary educators need in order to understand why students with dyslexia have difficulty with reading and how to support them in the classroom. Topics include:

  • What is dyslexia?
  • The Reading Brain
  • 5 Components of Reading
  • Screening for Dyslexia
  • Structured literacy Instruction: Sounds, Sound-Symbol Correspondences, Syllable Types, Morphemes

Format Options

Participants have a choice of formats for completing this course, including:

  1. Facilitated Online Course: combine the 6-hour online course with 2 hours of virtual-live sessions facilitated by a Keys trainer.
  2. Virtual-Live Training: participate in a 6-hour, virtual training delivered by a Keys trainer.
  3. Live, Onsite Training: a Keys trainer will deliver a 6-hour, live training live onsite at your school/district

Information about the Reading Instruction and Intensifying Instruction Course

A customized version of our Keys to Beginning Reading course is approved to meet the Oregon FSR and II training requirements. This 36-hour science-of-reading course provides the background knowledge needed to teach all the components of beginning reading instruction. Instructional suggestions are easily transferred to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published program. Course cost includes a 460-page training manual. The course is organized into these modules: Reading Basics, Oral Language, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Students with Reading Difficulties, Reading Assessment.

Participants have a choice of formats for completing this course, including
