Keys to Adolescent Literacy Keynote

The science of reading is not just for younger students—all adolescent learners, especially those who struggle with foundational skills, benefit from explicit literacy instruction. Based on Joan’s book Essentials of Adolescent Literacy, this presentation is designed for classroom teachers, intervention specialists, and leaders who want to learn effective strategies for helping students in grades 4–12 strengthen their reading and writing skills. Drawing on current research, Joan provides an overview of adolescent literacy, including its definition, how the science of reading applies to secondary grades, the three levels of instruction (content literacy, disciplinary literacy, and intervention for basic skills), and the importance of teaching reading and writing together. The presentation also explores the reasons some adolescents struggle with literacy and provides an overview of research-based interventions, along with a framework for secondary screening and diagnostic reading assessments. The session concludes with suggestions for integrating reading and writing across all subject areas.

Oral Language and Literacy Development among Adolescent Multilingual Students

More than 5 million multilingual students attend public schools in the United States, bringing rich linguistic diversity and valuable assets to the learning environment. To fully develop reading and writing skills, these students need strong oral language proficiency as a foundation for literacy growth. This session will explore the language and literacy continuum and its critical role across content areas. Participants will examine how oral language supports comprehension, academic vocabulary, reading, and written expression. The presentation will also highlight practical ways to integrate language development into reading and writing instruction, providing educators with strategies to deliver a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to literacy for multilingual learners.

Struggling Adolescent Readers Deserve More than Scaffolds

Too many schools do not provide additional targeted intervention time for older students but instead expect English teachers to read aloud and provide other scaffolds without understanding the specific skill gaps these students have. Without an effective MTSS system for older students and without data to uncover the exact need, targeted instruction is too often non-existent. In this session we’ll discuss the system and instructional elements vital to help older students before it is too late.

Magnificent Morphemes! Morphological Awareness for Secondary Vocabulary, Syntax and Comprehension

Morphemes are building blocks of meaning, but they also offer significant insight into spelling and syntax. Ultimately, morphological awareness improves reading comprehension and written expression. Instruction of these magnificent structures can be incorporated into any content area. This session will review the basics of morphology and provide ideas for explicit instruction to build morphological awareness in both vocabulary and syntax instruction. Spoiler alert: It’s not about memorizing morphemes!

Michelle Elia, Ed.D. Speaker Bio

Dr. Michelle Elia is an assistant professor at Marietta College, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate literacy courses. Michelle has worked at the school, regional, and state levels, teaching children in pre-kindergarten through high school. Elia is a national professional development provider, training educators in literacy instruction and assessment within an MTSS framework. She also serves as president of The Reading League – Ohio. A lifelong learner, Elia recently earned her doctorate in Reading Science at Mount St. Joseph University. Michelle is passionate about explicit instruction and applying the science of teaching, reading, and writing to the classroom, especially for struggling adolescent students. When she is not talking about literacy, her favorite job is being a mom to her three not-so-small children.
