2026 Write Now Alaska Keynote

The Writing Rope: Integrating Reading and Writing Instruction

Joan Sedita discusses the skills and strategies needed for proficient writing, what writing instruction should look like, and how writing and reading instruction can be integrated. You learn that reading and writing share the same cognitive processes and oral language base!

Joan uses The Writing Rope model as a framework for writing instruction to describe multiple components of writing instruction, represented as strands in a rope:

  1. Critical Thinking (generating ideas and information, stages of the writing process)
  2. Syntax (syntactic awareness, sentence elaboration, punctuation)
  3. Text Structure (narrative, informational, opinion; paragraph structure; patterns of organization)
  4. Writing Craft (awareness of task, audience, purpose; word choice; literary devices)
  5. Transcription (spelling and handwriting fluency)

Instructional suggestions for each strand will be shared, and you’ll learn how these writing strands compare with the strands in Scarborough’s Reading Rope (2006) along with how instruction can support both reading and writing. Participants learn:

  • A framework for teaching multiple components of writing
  • Evidence-based instructional suggestions for teaching writing
  • The importance of using an explicit approach to teaching writing
  • The importance of integrating reading and writing instruction

From Talk to Text: Evidence-Based Writing Practices for Multilingual Learners

Research on promising writing practices (Graham, 2019, 2021; Slavin et al., 2019) provides a strong foundation for multilingual learners (MLs), yet the gap between general education students and MLs is wider than ever. Emperical research in classrooms with English learners (Calderón, 2007; Escamilla & DeJong, 2026; Calderón & Brock, 2026; Brock & Calderón, 2026) shows that writing as the expression of learning requires intentional integration of oral language, discourse, and strategic scaffolding to support EL/ML student success. This session will present K–3 and 4–12 features proven effective for all students across the writing process—before writing, during drafting, editing, and revising in all subjects—while emphasizing purposeful scaffolding to move EL/ML and English speaking students from talk to text

Dr. Michelle Elia

Syntax, a Multi-Tool for Reading Comprehension and Writing in Grades 5-12

William van Cleave reminded us that “syntax matters” in both reading and writing instruction, especially in the upper grades. Syntax must be explicitly taught and connected to content. All good syntax instruction begins with a clause. In this session, participants will learn how to teach syntax to improve reading comprehension and written expression systematically. It’s about focusing on the function of words in sentences and not about memorizing the parts of speech.

Michelle Elia Speaker Bio

As an assistant professor at Marietta College, Michelle Elia prepares pre-service teachers to teach reading and writing using evidence-based practices. A special education teacher at heart, Michelle has worked in multiple roles at the school, regional, and state levels, teaching children in pre-kindergarten through high school. Michelle is a nationally recognized literacy professional development provider, training educators in literacy instruction and assessment within an MTSS framework. She serves as a school board member of her local district and president of The Reading League – Ohio. A lifelong learner, Elia is a doctoral candidate in Reading Science at Mount St. Joseph University. Michelle is passionate about explicit instruction and applying the science of teaching, reading, and writing to the classroom, especially for struggling adolescent students. When she is not talking about literacy, her favorite job is being a mom to her three not-so-small children.

Sentence Sense: Practical Strategies for Teaching Syntax Skills in the Early Grades (K-4)

Join Shauna Cotte, Vice President at Keys to Literacy, and Carla Sanford from Reading Universe as they explore why syntax is a powerful but often overlooked key to comprehension and writing success. This session will highlight how teaching sentence-level skills in the early grades supports both reading and writing development. Participants will walk away with practical, ready-to-use strategies that can be integrated into existing curriculum materials to strengthen students’ sentence construction and literacy proficiency.

Carla Burrell Stanford, M.Ed. Speaker Bio

Carla is the Director of Instructional Design at ReadingUniverse.org, where she turns the latest research on reading and writing into practical tools teachers can use every day. With over 25 years of experience as an educator, Carla, like many teachers, realized that she wasn’t taught how to actually teach a child to read. Once she gained that crucial knowledge and applied it in the classroom, it transformed her teaching. To share what she learned, she co-founded Reading is Essential for All People (REAP), which has trained over 1,900 educators. Now at Reading Universe, Carla is committed to helping teachers understand not just what to teach, but why it matters and how to do it well—drawing from her own journey of learning and practice. This mission is deeply personal to her—and always will be.

Handwriting is foundational to literacy; it is not a separate skill. When students write by hand, they activate the parts of the brain that support thinking, language, and memory. In this session, participants will explore research showing why handwriting benefits every learner and provides extra support for students who find reading and writing challenging.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will…

  • Discover how handwriting fits within the Science of Reading and the Science of Writing
  • Understand how handwriting supports decoding, encoding, and sentence writing
  • Explore research linking motor pathways, memory, and literacy development
  • Identify practical ways to integrate handwriting into core literacy instruction to support all learners
