LA Literacy Foundations Training

Keys to Literacy (KTL) is an approved provider of Literacy Foundations Training to meet the Act 108 requirement that K-3 teachers and administrators participate in early literacy training based on the science of reading (minimum of 52 hours). Current teachers must begin the training no later than the start of the 2023-24 school year. KTL will work with you to develop a customized professional learning plan that can begin as early as the fall of 2021. School systems will need to indicate on their Achieve! plan the number of teachers and leaders that need to be trained, as well as what vendor they have chosen.

Keys to Literacy Training Information

Keys to Beginning Reading is the name of the course, which is organized into these 11 modules: reading basics, oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence structure, text structure, comprehension, reading assessment, and students who have reading difficulty. Educators have several options for taking the course as described below.

1.) Facilitated Online Course: Teachers complete 40 hours of an asynchronous online course, combined with participation in 12 hours of virtual-live sessions facilitated by a Keys to Literacy trainer. The course is broken into sections, with the virtual-live sessions scheduled after teachers complete several online modules. (total: 52 hours)

2.) Virtual-Live Training: Teachers participate in 8 days (44 hours) of live training with a KTL trainer delivered virtually using Zoom video conferencing. In between training sessions, teachers complete approximately one hour of pre or post content assignments (for a total of 8 hours). (Total for course: 52 hours)

3.) Live, Onsite Training: Teachers participate in 8 days (44 hours) of live training with a KTL trainer delivered onsite at the district. There is a minimum of 2 days per visit.  In between sessions teachers complete approximately two hours of pre / post content assignments (for a total of 8 hours). (Total for course: 52 hours)

4.) NEW OPTION! Asynchronous Online Training Course: Teachers complete 55 hours of an asynchronous online course. Individuals can click here to register for this course titled Louisiana Keys to Early Literacy ($550). It is a combination of 40 hours of Keys to Beginning Reading and 15 hours of Keys to Early Writing. A Certificate of Completion can be accessed at the end of the course once the full course has been completed. Schools and districts that would like to register multiple educators should contact Keys to Literacy.
