Leadership Spotlight: Dr. Karen Langlands
Advancing Literacy Through Vision, Collaboration, and Systemic Impact
The Keys to Literacy Leadership Spotlight recognizes educational leaders who are making a meaningful difference in literacy outcomes for students and educators. This month, we are proud to celebrate Dr. Karen Langlands, Executive Director of Innovation & Learning for Chippewa Valley Schools, who was recently honored with the Michigan Reading Association (MRA) Administrator Award at the 2026 MRA Annual Conference.
The MRA Administrator Award recognizes school and district leaders who have made a significant impact on literacy instruction and reading achievement in their schools or communities. Recipients are leaders who promote strong literacy practices, support teachers in strengthening reading instruction, and advocate for literacy initiatives that benefit students across schools and communities. Through this award, the Michigan Reading Association celebrates administrators who create the conditions for high-quality literacy instruction and elevate exemplary leadership across the state.
Dr. Langlands exemplifies these qualities through her systemic leadership and unwavering commitment to literacy improvement across Chippewa Valley Schools. As Executive Director of Innovation & Learning, she has played a pivotal role in aligning instructional practices with evidence-based literacy research, ensuring that all students have access to strong literacy instruction and the support they need to succeed.
Over the past four years, Dr. Langlands has partnered closely with Keys to Literacy (previously Schools Cubed) as Chippewa Valley has worked to strengthen and refine its districtwide literacy systems. During this time, Karen has been an integral partner in the work—learning alongside the leadership consultants, engaging in deep conversations around instructional practice, and continuing to support literacy leadership between visits. She has consistently taken her learning and insights back to the district level, working to streamline best practices, strengthen systems and routines, and build coherent structures that support sustainable literacy improvement across Chippewa School District. Her commitment to translating learning into action has helped ensure that the work extends beyond individual classrooms and becomes embedded within the district’s long-term literacy framework.
A hallmark of Dr. Langlands’ leadership is her commitment to professional learning and educator empowerment. She has worked diligently to create opportunities for teachers and instructional leaders to deepen their understanding of research-based literacy practices and refine their instructional approaches. Through thoughtful professional development and ongoing support, she has helped educators implement strategies that lead to measurable improvements in student achievement.
Beyond her role as a district leader, Dr. Langlands is widely respected for her collaborative leadership style and ability to foster a culture of continuous improvement. She has successfully bridged district-level priorities with classroom realities, ensuring that teachers have the tools, resources, and guidance needed to sustain meaningful literacy growth. By prioritizing equitable access to literacy instruction and supporting diverse learners, she has helped position literacy as the foundation for student success and lifelong learning.
Dr. Langland’s work reflects the very purpose of the Michigan Reading Association’s Administrator Award—recognizing leaders who champion literacy and build systems that support educators and students alike. Her vision, dedication, and collaborative approach continue to strengthen literacy outcomes across Chippewa Valley Schools and serve as an inspiration to educational leaders throughout Michigan.
Congratulations to Dr. Karen Langlands, the 2026 recipient of the Michigan Reading Association Administrator Award. We are honored to highlight her leadership and the lasting impact she is making on students, educators, and the broader literacy community.
